Ingredients

  • 4 sausages
  • 300 g of bread
  • 3 eggs
  • 50 g of butter
  • 50 g of sugar
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 2 tablespoons of apple sauce
  • 1 tablespoon of mayonnaise

Method

  1. Prepare the bread: grate the bread into a large bowl and add sugar, eggs, butter, salt, and pepper. Mix well until you get a homogeneous dough.
  2. In a baking dish, place the sausages on a layer of bread dough.
  3. Cover the sausages with the bread dough, completely coating them.
  4. In a small bowl, mix the apple sauce and mayonnaise together. Spread this mixture over the bread dough.
  5. Bake in the oven at 180°C for 30-40 minutes, or until the bread dough is golden and crispy.
  6. Serve hot, accompanied by a salad of vegetables or a portion of french fries.

The story

Toad in the Hole is a traditional Irish dish, particularly popular in the Louth region. The name is said to come from the way the sausages resemble toads hiding in the crispy bread batter.
