Spanish torrijas are a traditional dessert, crispy on the outside and soft on the inside, served with a fruit sauce.

Ingredients

  • 4 slices of fresh fruit bread
  • 2 cups of milk
  • 2 eggs
  • 1/2 cup of sugar
  • 1/4 cup of granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup of powdered sugar
  • 1/4 cup of water
  • 1/2 cup of powdered sugar for the sauce
  • 1/4 cup of water for the sauce
  • 1/2 cup of honey for the sauce
  • 1/2 cup of orange juice for the sauce
  • 1/2 cup of fresh fruit cut into pieces for the sauce

Method

  1. Clean and slice the bread into thin slices, then soak them in a mixture of milk and sugar for 30 minutes.
  2. In another bowl, beat the eggs with granulated sugar and powdered sugar.
  3. Dip the bread slices in the milk mixture for 2-3 minutes, then coat them in the egg mixture.
  4. Preheat the oven to 180°C and fry the bread slices in hot oil until they become crispy, then let them cool.
  5. For the sauce, combine powdered sugar, water, honey, and orange juice in a pan and bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 10 minutes.
  6. Add the fresh fruit cut into pieces to a bowl, pour the sauce over it and mix well.
  7. Serve the torrijas warm with the fruit sauce on top.

The story

Torrijas have ancient origins, but their modern version emerged during the Christian period in Spain, using old bread to make desserts more economical.
