Ingredients

  • 300 g of flour
  • 150 ml of warm water
  • 1 tablespoon of oil
  • Salt to taste
  • 1 tablespoon of sugar
  • 1 tablespoon of butter
  • 2 tablespoons of milk

Method

  1. Mix the flour, warm water, oil, salt, and sugar to form a dough.
  2. Divide the dough into 4-6 pieces and shape each into a ball.
  3. In a hot pan, add the butter and milk, stirring until a smooth mixture is formed.
  4. Prepare a work surface with a little flour and start rolling out one of the balls into a thin sheet.
  5. Wrap the sheet in the butter and milk mixture, repeating until a thin sheet is achieved.
  6. Repeat the process with the other dough pieces.
  7. Cook the roti canai on a hot pan, gently flipping until it puffs up.
  8. Serve hot.

The story

Roti canai has its origins in Southeast Asia, brought by Indian immigrants and then adapted by the Malay people. It has become particularly popular in Malaysia and Indonesia.
