Ingredients

  • 250 g of flour
  • 100 g of sugar
  • 100 g of butter
  • 1 egg
  • 100 g of crushed almonds
  • 100 g of semi-sweet chocolate
  • 1 packet of yeast
  • 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract
  • Granulated sugar for decoration

Method

  1. Mix the flour, yeast, sugar, and vanilla in a large bowl.
  2. In another bowl, mix the melted butter with the egg white until you get a smooth cream.
  3. Add the cream to the flour mixture and mix until you get a homogeneous dough.
  4. Divide the dough into small balls and form pizzarelle, incorporating the crushed almonds.
  5. Let the pizzarelle rise for 30 minutes.
  6. Fry the pizzarelle in hot oil until they become golden.
  7. Drain and let them cool down.
  8. Melt the chocolate and decorate the pizzarelle with a drop of melted chocolate on top.
  9. Sprinkle with granulated sugar.

The story

Pizzarelle were introduced to the Molise region during the medieval period, but became particularly popular in the 1950s and 1960s when the recipe was adapted to suit local tastes.
