Ingredients

  • 1 kg of beef
  • 600 ml of water
  • 400 ml of beef broth
  • 2 onions
  • 2 carrots
  • 2 cabbages
  • 1 red bell pepper
  • 2 green bell peppers
  • 2 tablespoons of chili powder
  • 2 tablespoons of black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon of cardamom
  • 1 tablespoon of cinnamon
  • Salt to taste

Method

  1. Cut the beef into pieces and put it in a pot with water and beef broth.
  2. Bring to a boil and simmer over medium heat for 2 hours, adding salt to taste.
  3. Dice the onions, carrots, cabbage, red bell pepper, and green bell peppers.
  4. Add the chopped vegetables to the pot with the beef and continue to cook for another hour.
  5. Add the chili powder, black pepper, cardamom, and cinnamon, stir well and let cook for another 30 minutes.
  6. Serving: Serve the Nihari hot with a little salt and pepper to taste.

The story

Originating from Lahore, Nihari is said to have been first created in 1920 as a dish to celebrate festive occasions.
