Nihari is a traditional Punjabi dish made by slowly cooking beef in a spiced broth.

Ingredients
- 1 kg of beef
- 600 ml of water
- 400 ml of beef broth
- 2 onions
- 2 carrots
- 2 cabbages
- 1 red bell pepper
- 2 green bell peppers
- 2 tablespoons of chili powder
- 2 tablespoons of black pepper
- 1 tablespoon of cardamom
- 1 tablespoon of cinnamon
- Salt to taste
Method
- Cut the beef into pieces and put it in a pot with water and beef broth.
- Bring to a boil and simmer over medium heat for 2 hours, adding salt to taste.
- Dice the onions, carrots, cabbage, red bell pepper, and green bell peppers.
- Add the chopped vegetables to the pot with the beef and continue to cook for another hour.
- Add the chili powder, black pepper, cardamom, and cinnamon, stir well and let cook for another 30 minutes.
- Serving: Serve the Nihari hot with a little salt and pepper to taste.
The story
Originating from Lahore, Nihari is said to have been first created in 1920 as a dish to celebrate festive occasions.
