Ingredients

  • 300 g of flour
  • 100 g of sugar
  • 100 ml of milk
  • 2 eggs
  • 100 g of butter
  • 1 packet of yeast
  • 1 teaspoon of cinnamon powder
  • 100 ml of white wine
  • Cold water for the bain-marie
  • Granulated sugar for decoration
  • Baking powder for frying

Method

  1. In a bowl, mix the flour, sugar, yeast, and cinnamon.
  2. In another bowl, mix the milk, eggs, melted butter, and white wine.
  3. Combine the dry ingredients with the liquid and mix until you get a homogeneous dough.
  4. Cut small slices of dough with a koeksister cutter and drop them into boiling water.
  5. Cook for 2-3 minutes, then transfer to a cold bain-marie to cool.
  6. Fry the slices in hot oil until they become crispy.
  7. Drain on a baking paper lined with granulated sugar.
  8. Serve warm or cold.

The story

Koeksisters originated in Cape South Africa and were introduced by the Dutch, who called them 'koek' (cake). They were adapted to include sugar and wine, becoming a local specialty.
