Hawawshi

Hawawshi is a traditional Cairo dish, a stuffed sandwich filled with meat and crunchy vegetables, crispy and delicious.

Ingredients
- 500 g of ground meat
- 1 onion
- 2 carrots
- 1 zucchini
- 1 bell pepper
- 50 g of mint
- 50 g of parsley
- 1 tablespoon of sugar
- 1 tablespoon of salt
- 1/2 teaspoon of pepper
- 1/2 teaspoon of nutmeg
- 100 g of bread
- oil for frying
Method
- Peel and chop the onion, carrots, zucchini, and bell pepper. Add the ground meat and mix well.
- Transfer the mixture to a pan and add sugar, salt, pepper, and nutmeg. Cook over medium heat for 20-25 minutes, stirring occasionally.
- Meanwhile, cut the bread into squares about 10x10 cm. Fry the bread pieces in hot oil until golden and crispy.
- Fill the bread pieces with the meat and vegetable mixture. Cover with another piece of bread and fry for 2-3 minutes on each side until golden.
- Serve the hawawshi hot, garnished with mint and parsley.
