These crispy and light cookies are a traditional Christmas delight in Trentino-Alto Adige.

Ingredients
- 250g of flour
- 100g of butter
- 1 egg
- 1 tablespoon of baking powder
- 1 tablespoon of sugar
- 1/4 cup of milk
- 1/2 teaspoon of salt
- 100g of granulated sugar
- oil for frying
Method
- In a bowl, mix the flour, baking powder, sugar, and salt.
- In another bowl, beat the egg, melted butter, and milk together.
- Combine the egg and milk mixture with the flour mixture until a homogeneous dough forms.
- Let the dough rest for 30 minutes.
- Divide the dough into small pieces and form into balls.
- Fry the balls in hot oil until they turn golden.
- Drain the fried dough balls on paper towels and sprinkle with granulated sugar.
- Serve warm.
The story
Fried bread cookies, or gnocco fritto, originated in Alpine regions as a way to use leftover yeast after bread making.
