Ingredients

  • 250g of flour
  • 100g of butter
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tablespoon of baking powder
  • 1 tablespoon of sugar
  • 1/4 cup of milk
  • 1/2 teaspoon of salt
  • 100g of granulated sugar
  • oil for frying

Method

  1. In a bowl, mix the flour, baking powder, sugar, and salt.
  2. In another bowl, beat the egg, melted butter, and milk together.
  3. Combine the egg and milk mixture with the flour mixture until a homogeneous dough forms.
  4. Let the dough rest for 30 minutes.
  5. Divide the dough into small pieces and form into balls.
  6. Fry the balls in hot oil until they turn golden.
  7. Drain the fried dough balls on paper towels and sprinkle with granulated sugar.
  8. Serve warm.

The story

Fried bread cookies, or gnocco fritto, originated in Alpine regions as a way to use leftover yeast after bread making.
