Ingredients

  • 12 banana leaves
  • 250 g glutinous rice
  • 200 ml water
  • 100 g sugar
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
  • 1 tablespoon coconut oil
  • 100 g sesame seeds
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 1 lemon
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 tablespoon water

Method

  1. Clean and wash the banana leaves, then dry them thoroughly.
  2. In a bowl, mix the glutinous rice with water, sugar, vanilla extract, and coconut oil until you get a homogeneous paste.
  3. Place banana leaves on a baking tray, placing a spoonful of rice paste in each.
  4. Cover with more banana leaves, forming a packet.
  5. Repeat with the rest of the glutinous rice.
  6. Make the soy sauce sauce: mix the soy sauce with sugar and lemon juice.
  7. Serve the Bánh bèo hot with the soy sauce and lemon sauce.
  8. Squeeze a bit of lemon over each Bánh bèo before serving.

The story

The Bánh bèo of Huế has a long history dating back to the time of the Nguyen dynasty, when it was served as a dessert for the princesses.
