Bánh Bèo
This traditional Huế sweet is a delicate and crunchy delight, served with a soy and lemon sauce.

Ingredients
- 12 banana leaves
- 250 g glutinous rice
- 200 ml water
- 100 g sugar
- 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
- 1 tablespoon coconut oil
- 100 g sesame seeds
- 2 tablespoons soy sauce
- 1 lemon
- 1 tablespoon sugar
- 1 tablespoon water
Method
- Clean and wash the banana leaves, then dry them thoroughly.
- In a bowl, mix the glutinous rice with water, sugar, vanilla extract, and coconut oil until you get a homogeneous paste.
- Place banana leaves on a baking tray, placing a spoonful of rice paste in each.
- Cover with more banana leaves, forming a packet.
- Repeat with the rest of the glutinous rice.
- Make the soy sauce sauce: mix the soy sauce with sugar and lemon juice.
- Serve the Bánh bèo hot with the soy sauce and lemon sauce.
- Squeeze a bit of lemon over each Bánh bèo before serving.
The story
The Bánh bèo of Huế has a long history dating back to the time of the Nguyen dynasty, when it was served as a dessert for the princesses.
