Stone Soup

A delicious and traditional Portuguese soup, made with heated stones to warm the broth.

Ingredients
- 2 liters of meat broth
- 1 onion
- 2 carrots
- 2 cucumbers
- 1 zucchini
- 100 grams of lentils
- 100 grams of potatoes
- 100 grams of zucchini
- 100 grams of cucumber
- 1 lemon
- salt and pepper to taste
Method
- In a large pot, bring the meat broth to a boil.
- Chop the onion, carrots, cucumbers, and zucchini into large pieces.
- Add the vegetables to the boiling broth and cook for 10-15 minutes.
- Peel and chop the potatoes into cubes.
- Add the potatoes to the broth and cook for another 10-15 minutes, until the potatoes are soft.
- Add the lentils and cook for another 5-10 minutes.
- Cut the lemon and add the juice to the broth, season with salt and pepper to taste.
- Serve hot, using large bowls to maintain the heat.
The story
Stone Soup is a traditional soup from the city of Guarda, in the district of Guarda, Portugal. The name is said to derive from the original cooking method, which involved using heated stones to warm the broth.
