This traditional West Flanders speculaas has a strong aroma and a crunchy crust.

Ingredients
- 250 g of flour
- 100 g of sugar
- 100 g of butter
- 1 egg
- 1 packet of baking powder
- 1 teaspoon of ground cinnamon
- 1 teaspoon of brown sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon of ground nutmeg
- 1/4 teaspoon of salt
- 1/2 teaspoon of caster sugar
- 1 teaspoon of water
- 1 drop of vanilla essence
Method
- In a bowl, mix the flour, sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt.
- In another bowl, beat the egg with the butter, baking powder, and a little water.
- Combine the flour mixture with the egg and butter mixture, stirring well.
- Form uniform-sized balls and place them on a baking tray.
- Melt the caster sugar in a little water and spray it on the speculaas.
- Bake in a preheated oven at 180°C for 10-12 minutes.
- Allow to cool before serving.
The story
Speculaas from West Flanders are known for their medieval origins and became popular in the 17th century when the city of Ypres was an important trading center.
