Sheermal is a crunchy sweet bread with a fragrant cardamom flavor, a specialty from Peshawar, Pakistan.

Ingredients
- 250 g of flour
- 150 g of butter
- 150 g of sugar
- 1/2 cup of milk
- 1/2 cup of honey
- 1/2 cup of oil
- 1/2 cup of water
- 1 packet of yeast
- 1/2 cup of cardamom powder
- 1/2 cup of fennel seed powder
- 1/2 cup of cinnamon powder
- 1/2 cup of pulled sugar for decoration
Method
- In a large bowl, mix the flour, yeast, cardamom powder, fennel seed powder, and cinnamon powder.
- In another bowl, mix the butter, sugar, milk, honey, oil, and water until you get a homogeneous mixture.
- Add the liquid mixture to the flour mixture and stir until you get a homogeneous dough.
- Let the dough rise, covered, in a warm place for about 1 hour.
- Form balls of dough about 5 cm in diameter and fry in a hot pan with oil until they turn golden brown.
- Drizzle with pulled sugar and serve cold or warm.
The story
Sheermal is a culinary tradition that dates back to the time of the Afghan kingdom, known then as Khorasan, and was later brought to Peshawar through the trade routes.
