Ingredients

  • 2 tomatoes
  • 2 onions
  • 1 watermelon
  • 1 red onion
  • 1 lemon
  • 100 g of ghee (butter oil)
  • 1 tablespoon of kicap manis (sweet soy sauce)
  • 1 tablespoon of kicap asam (sour soy sauce)
  • 1 tablespoon of dried chili
  • 1 tablespoon of sugar
  • salt to taste
  • 1 cingur onion (optional)

Method

  1. Clean and dice the tomatoes, onions, watermelon, and red onion.
  2. In a bowl, mix the ghee, sweet soy sauce, sour soy sauce, sugar, dried chili, and salt.
  3. Add the diced fruit and vegetables to the sauce and mix well.
  4. If desired, add the cingur onion and mix.
  5. Let the rujak sit for at least 15 minutes before serving.
  6. Serve fresh, in glasses or mugs.

The story

Rujak Cingur is a traditional Surabaya appetizer that dates back to the British colonial era, when British colonists combined local fruits with traditional Indonesian condiments.
