Ingredients

  • 2 beefsteaks (about 7 oz each)
  • 5 oz fresh mozzarella
  • 2 onions
  • 2 basil leaves
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon ketchup
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 2 hoagie rolls

Method

  1. Slice the onions thinly and in small rounds.
  2. In a pan, sauté the onions in a bit of olive oil until they become golden and soft.
  3. Cut the beefsteaks into small pieces and add them to the pan with ketchup, salt, and pepper. Cook over medium heat until the beef is well done.
  4. In another pan, toast the hoagie rolls for a few minutes over high heat.
  5. Assemble the sandwiches with the onion sauce, cooked beef, and cubed mozzarella.
  6. Serve hot, garnished with basil leaves.

The story

The Philly Cheesesteak traces its origins back to the 1930s when Pat Olivieri, a baker, first served his special sandwich in his shop.
