Pastitsio is a traditional Greek dish, a blend of pasta and meat cooked slowly in a tomato sauce.

Ingredients

  • 2 lbs ground beef
  • 500 g spaghetti
  • 1 liter tomato sauce
  • 2 onions
  • 2 zucchinis
  • 200 g grated cheese
  • 800 ml beef broth
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 100 g zucchini
  • 100 g broccoli
  • 100 g cubed pumpkin

Method

  1. In a pan, sauté the onions in a bit of olive oil until they become translucent.
  2. Add the ground beef and cook until fully cooked.
  3. In another pot, mix the tomato sauce, beef broth, and cubed vegetables.
  4. Cook on medium heat for 30 minutes, adding salt and pepper to taste.
  5. In a large baking dish, layer a strip of pasta, then a spoonful of sauce, another strip of pasta, and so on.
  6. Cover with grated cheese and bake in a preheated oven at 180°C for 20-25 minutes.
  7. Serve hot, accompanied by a cold beer.

The story

Pastitsio was born in the 19th century as a way to use leftover dishes, eventually becoming a beloved and popular dish throughout Greece.
