Nova Scotian Donair

A classic of Canadian cuisine, the Nova Scotian Donair is a smoked, sweet and spicy dish that will take you back in time.

Ingredients
- 2 kg of smoked beef slices
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 teaspoon black pepper
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- 1 teaspoon chili powder
- 1 teaspoon garlic salt
- 1 teaspoon white vinegar
- 1 teaspoon lime juice
- 1 tablespoon fresh mint, chopped
- 1 red onion, chopped
- 1 tablespoon Greek yogurt
Method
- In a bowl, mix together the olive oil, black pepper, salt, sugar, chili powder, garlic salt, white vinegar, lime juice, mint, and onion.
- Add the smoked beef slices to the marinade and mix well to coat the meat completely.
- Let the meat marinate in the refrigerator for at least 2 hours.
- When ready to serve, cook the meat in a pan or on a grill for 5-7 minutes.
- Slice the meat into chunks and serve with Greek yogurt as a sauce.
- Serve with slices of bread or fries for a complete experience.

Donair was introduced to Canada in 1962 and spread across the country, but its authentic taste can be found in Halifax, where donairs are made with locally smoked meat.
