Ingredients

  • 500 g of polenta
  • 1 liter of water
  • 100 g of butter
  • 100 g of sugar
  • 1 teaspoon of salt
  • 100 ml of milk
  • 100 g of cooked ham, chopped
  • Balsamic vinegar for serving
  • Chopped parsley for serving

Method

  1. In a pot, bring water and butter to a boil, then gradually add the polenta while constantly stirring.
  2. Continue to add the polenta until a smooth and creamy consistency is achieved.
  3. Add the salt and sugar, stirring well.
  4. Slowly pour in the milk and continue to stir until the polenta reaches the desired consistency.
  5. Add the chopped cooked ham and gently mix.
  6. Serve hot, garnished with balsamic vinegar and chopped parsley.
  7. Let it rest for a few minutes before serving to allow the polenta to cool slightly.

The story

Mamaliga originates from Romanian cuisine and was brought to the United States by Romanian refugees, where it was adapted to local tastes.
