Langos is a crispy and slightly sweet flatbread made with yeast and cornmeal, perfect as an appetizer or snack.

Ingredients

  • 250 g of cornmeal
  • 100 g of yeast
  • 500 ml of cold water
  • 1 egg
  • 2 tablespoons of oil
  • Salt to taste
  • Oil for frying
  • Rectangular mold for preparation
  • Optional: grated cheese, chopped tomatoes, fried onions

Method

  1. In a bowl, mix the cornmeal, yeast, cold water, oil, and salt. Add the egg and mix until you get a homogeneous dough.
  2. Cover the bowl with a cloth and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour.
  3. Prepare a rectangular mold and line the bottom with a bit of the dough. Fry in hot oil until the surface becomes crispy and golden.
  4. Remove from the frying stage and optionally add grated cheese, chopped tomatoes, and fried onions.
  5. Serve hot, accompanied by hot sauce or honey if preferred.

The story

Langos originates from Hungary, traditionally prepared during Christian festivals as a way to use up cornmeal left over from the harvest.
