Ila Jumbo (Pepper Soup)

A classic of Nigerian cuisine, Ila Jumbo is an intense and spicy soup that will envelop your table with an intoxicating aroma.

Ingredients
- 400 g of dried peppers
- 1 liter of fish broth
- 3 onions
- 2 green bell peppers
- 1 red onion
- 2 garlic cloves
- 1 chili pepper
- 1 teaspoon of Kario pepper
- 1 teaspoon of cayenne pepper
- 1 teaspoon of coriander
- 1 teaspoon of ginger
- 1 teaspoon of chili powder
Method
- Soak the dried peppers in water for 30 minutes.
- Dice the ingredients into small pieces.
- In a large pot, add the fish broth and soaked peppers. Bring to a boil.
- Add the diced ingredients and cook for 30 minutes.
- Blend and add the spices. Cook for an additional 10 minutes.
- Turn off the heat and serve hot.
The story
Originally prepared by the fishermen of the Hadejia Lake in Northwestern Nigeria, Ila Jumbo was a fish-based soup. Today, it has become popular nationwide and fits well into any meal.
