Herring Porridge

A classic Swedish dish, Sillgröt is a porridge made with barley and salted herring.

Ingredients
- 200 g of barley
- 400 g of salted herring
- 1 liter of water
- 1 tablespoon of olive oil
- 1 teaspoon of salt
- 1 onion
- 200 g of potatoes
- 50 g of zucchini
- 1 teaspoon of chili powder
- 100 ml of milk
Method
- In a pot, put the water, oil, salt, and barley. Bring to a boil and cook for about 30 minutes, or until the barley is soft.
- Meanwhile, peel and cut the potatoes into small cubes and cook them with the skin on.
- Chop the onion and zucchini into thin slices.
- In a pan, cook the onion and zucchini in a bit of olive oil.
- Cut the salted herring into small pieces and add it to the pan with the vegetables. Cook for 5-10 minutes.
- Add the onion, chili powder, and milk to the barley soup. Stir well.
- Finally, add the herring and potatoes to the barley and stir well.
- Let it boil for a few minutes until everything is well combined and the taste is unique.
The story
Sillgröt has roots in Swedish rural tradition, where it was prepared with local and simple ingredients. Today, it is still loved for its nutritional richness and authentic taste.
