Ingredients

  • 1 kg of flour
  • 300 ml of water
  • 300 g of butter
  • 2 eggs
  • 200 g of smoked ham
  • 100 g of onion
  • 50 g of sugar
  • 50 g of salt
  • 100 ml of oil

Method

  1. Prepare the empanada dough by mixing flour, butter, water, and eggs until you get a smooth dough.
  2. Dice the smoked ham and onion into small pieces.
  3. In a pan, sauté the onion with a bit of oil, add the ham and salt, and stir well.
  4. Shape the empanadas by placing a spoonful of filling on one half of the dough and sealing with the other half.
  5. Make a small hole in the center of each empanada and heat some oil in a pan. Fry the empanadas in the hot oil.
  6. Fry the empanadas until they become golden and crispy, then serve them hot.

The story

Ham empanadas became popular in Cali in the 1950s when market women started selling these small, quick and convenient snacks.
