Ingredients

  • 2 lbs of chicken, cut into pieces
  • 2 tablespoons of sake
  • 2 tablespoons of soy sauce
  • 2 tablespoons of shoyu sauce
  • 2 tablespoons of mirin
  • 1 tablespoon of sugar
  • 1 tablespoon of pepper
  • 100 grams of vegetable pieces (onion, carrot, bell pepper)
  • 100 grams of vegetable pieces (sweet potato, pumpkin)

Method

  1. In a pan, mix the sake, soy sauce, shoyu sauce, mirin, sugar, and pepper.
  2. Add the chicken pieces and let marinate for at least 30 minutes.
  3. Thread the chicken pieces onto skewers of wood.
  4. Grill the skewers of chicken for 5-10 minutes, turning occasionally, until the skin becomes crispy.
  5. Add the vegetable pieces and grill for another 5-7 minutes until they are al dente.
  6. Serve hot with soy sauce and pepper to taste.

The story

Yakitori originated from casual lunches initially practiced by railway workers in Japan. Over time, they became a popular dish in izakayas, or casual drinking establishments, where customers can order various dishes and drink beer.
