Ingredients

  • 250 g of sourdough starter
  • 500 g of wheat flour
  • 4 eggs
  • 200 g of sugar
  • 100 g of butter
  • 1 teaspoon of cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon of vanilla
  • 100 g of almonds
  • 100 g of cocoa powder

Method

  1. Prepare the dough by mixing the sourdough starter, flour, and water to achieve a soft consistency.
  2. In another bowl, beat the eggs, sugar, butter, cinnamon, and vanilla.
  3. Increase the dough consistency with the flour and mix until you get a homogeneous mixture.
  4. Add the egg and sugar mixture to the dough and mix well.
  5. Finally, add the chopped almonds and cocoa powder.
  6. Let the dough rise in a warm place for about 12 hours.
  7. Shape the Cozonac into a croissant or cross shape and bake in a preheated oven at 180°C for 45-50 minutes.

Cozonac is a traditional Romanian sweet bread with roots tracing back to medieval times, served as a meal for pilgrims during the Christ Walk celebrations.
