Ingredients

  • 400 g of calamari
  • 1 onion
  • 100 g of parsley
  • 100 g of breadcrumbs
  • 2 eggs
  • 100 g of cracker meal
  • 500 ml of olive oil
  • Tomato sauce
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Method

  1. Clean the calamari and cut them into thin strips.
  2. In three separate bowls, place the flour, beaten eggs, and cracker meal.
  3. Dredge the calamari in each of the three bowls, ensuring they are fully coated.
  4. Fry the calamari in hot oil until golden and crispy.
  5. Drain the calamari on paper towels and serve them hot with the tomato sauce in the center of the plate.
  6. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
  7. Place a paper towel on the plate to absorb any excess oil.

The story

New England calamari gained fame in the 1950s and 1960s when local fishermen started preparing them for the tourists visiting their coastal towns.
