Ingredients

  • 200g of red bell peppers, sliced
  • 100g of green bell peppers, sliced
  • 100g of red onions, diced
  • 50g of white onions, diced
  • 100g of leeks, diced
  • 50g of yellow bell peppers, sliced
  • 100g of dried tomatoes, chopped
  • 50g of cucumbers, diced
  • 2 tablespoons of white wine vinegar
  • 2 tablespoons of sugar
  • 2 tablespoons of olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon of black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon of salt

Method

  1. Slice the red and green bell peppers, and dice the red onions, white onions, and leeks.
  2. In a pan, sauté the onion mix with a bit of olive oil over medium heat.
  3. Add the bell peppers, yellow bell peppers, and leeks, sauté for another 5 minutes.
  4. Chop the dried tomatoes and add them to the pan, stir well.
  5. Add the white wine vinegar, sugar, black pepper, and salt, stir and let cook for 10 minutes.
  6. Finally, add the diced cucumbers and stir for 2 minutes.
  7. Let it cool before serving as a side dish.

Chakalaka originated in South Africa and reached Johannesburg through African immigration, becoming a beloved dish throughout the city.
