A delicious shellfish sauce in the cataplana, a traditional dish from Southern Portugal.

Ingredients

  • 2 cataplans
  • 500 g shrimp
  • 300 g clams
  • 200 g zucchini
  • 1 onion
  • 200 ml white wine
  • 300 ml fish stock
  • 200 g potatoes
  • 200 g porcini mushrooms
  • 200 g bell peppers
  • salt and pepper to taste
  • 200 ml extra virgin olive oil

Method

  1. Prepare the cataplans: clean the clams, mussels, and shrimp, then chop the garlic, onion, and vegetables.
  2. In one of the two cataplans, heat the oil and the onion until it turns golden brown.
  3. Add the shrimp and vegetables and sauté for 5 minutes.
  4. Pour in the white wine and let it reduce for 2-3 minutes.
  5. Add the fish stock, clams, mussels, potatoes, and porcini mushrooms. Cover and cook for 15-20 minutes on medium heat.
  6. In the second cataplana, prepare a sauce with the garlic, oil, and bell peppers.
  7. Combine the two preparations and serve hot.
  8. Tasty and perfect for a family lunch.

Cataplana de Marisco is a traditional dish from the Algarve region in Southern Portugal, where the cataplana, a two-pot cooking vessel, is used to prepare rich shellfish dishes.
