A traditional Flevoland dish, rich in flavor and tradition, combining rice with apple marmalade.

Ingredients

  • 200g of rice
  • 200g of braam (local fruit)
  • 200g of sugar
  • 200ml of water
  • 100ml of white wine
  • 200ml of chicken broth
  • 100ml of olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon of powdered sugar
  • 1/2 cinnamon stick
  • 1 teaspoon of grated lemon peel
  • Salt to taste

Method

  1. Clean and cut the braam into small pieces.
  2. In a pan, heat the olive oil and fry the braam for about 5 minutes.
  3. Add the sugar, white wine, and chicken broth, bring to a boil and reduce heat to medium.
  4. In a separate pot, mix the rice with warm chicken broth and cook for about 15-20 minutes until the rice is al dente.
  5. Add the cooked rice and remaining braam broth to the pan with the braam, stir well and cook for another 5 minutes.
  6. Turn off the heat, add the cinnamon, powdered sugar, and grated lemon, stir well and let it cool.
  7. Serve hot, topped with apple marmalade.

The story

Braamrijstebrij, or 'braam rice', is a local specialty from Flevoland that has evolved from the traditional rice and fruit recipe, a practice that has been maintained over time.
