Ingredients

  • 200g of phyllo pastry sheets
  • 150g of sugar
  • 100g of water
  • 100g of chopped almonds
  • 100g of powdered sugar
  • 100g of butter
  • 10 cinnamon leaves
  • 1 lemon
  • 200g of honey

Method

  1. Prepare the phyllo pastry by cutting the sheets into smaller pieces.
  2. In a saucepan, mix the butter with sugar and water, bring to a boil and let it cool.
  3. In a baking dish, layer the phyllo sheets, sprinkle with almonds, dust with powdered sugar, and repeat until all ingredients are used up.
  4. Sprinkle with cinnamon and lemon juice, then cover with the last phyllo sheets.
  5. Baste with the honey syrup and bake in the oven at 180°C for 30-40 minutes.
  6. Let it cool before serving.

The story

Baklava has a long history dating back to Roman times, but it became particularly popular in Israel during the Ottoman period.
