Ingredients

  • 250 g of flour
  • 100 g of butter
  • 1 egg
  • 100 g of sugar
  • 100 g of apple and chocolate jam
  • 1/2 teaspoon of vanilla
  • 100 g of powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon of water
  • 100 g of butter for frying

Method

  1. Mix the flour with melted butter and oil, add the egg, sugar, and vanilla. Form a dough ball and let it rest.
  2. Divide the dough into 4-6 pieces and form round pirogi, filling them with apple and chocolate jam.
  3. Make a small hole in the center of each pirogi and pour a bit of water with sugar to create a golden top.
  4. Fry the pirogi in boiling water with a bit of butter, turning them for even cooking.
  5. Drain the pirogi and serve them warm with a dusting of powdered sugar.

The story

Pirogi originate from Russia and have become popular in other former Soviet countries. These sweet pastries are traditionally prepared in summer when fruits are abundant.
