Ingredients

  • 1 round loaf of muffuletta bread
  • 200 g cooked ham
  • 100 g cured ham
  • 100 g provolone cheese
  • 100 g black olives
  • 200 g mozzarella cheese
  • 100 g sliced tomatoes
  • 100 g sliced red onion
  • 30 g fresh basil
  • 30 g olive oil
  • 10 g salt

Method

  1. Split the muffuletta bread in half lengthwise.
  2. Layer the ingredients on the inside of the bread: cooked ham, cured ham, provolone cheese, black olives, mozzarella, tomatoes, and red onion.
  3. Drizzle with olive oil and sprinkle with salt.
  4. Cover the other half of the bread and press down gently.
  5. Let it sit for 10 minutes to allow the cheese to melt slightly.
  6. Slice into portions and serve immediately.

The story

The Muffuletta originated in New Orleans in the 1920s, named after the round, flat bread used as the base for the sandwich.
