Zwiebelkuchen is a fragrant sweet pie with crunchy onions, a traditional dessert from the Frankfurt region, enjoyed as a pastry.

Ingredients
- 500g of onions
- 2 eggs
- 200g of sugar
- 100g of flour
- 100g of margarine
- 1 packet of baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon of powdered sugar
- 1/4 teaspoon of salt
- 1 sheet of pastry
- 100g of cream
- 100g of dark chocolate
- 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract
- 100g of crushed almonds
Method
- Peel and cut the onions into small cubes, sauté in a bowl with a bit of oil until they become golden and soft.
- In a second bowl, mix the eggs, sugar, flour, margarine, baking powder, powdered sugar, and salt.
- Add the sautéed onion sauce to the egg mixture and stir well.
- Roll out the pastry on a baking tray and pour the preparation over it.
- Make a bath in boiling water with the dark chocolate and cream, stir until you get a smooth sauce and pour it over the preparation.
- Sprinkle with powdered sugar and decorate with crushed almonds.
- Bake the dessert in the oven at 180°C for 30-35 minutes or until the surface is golden and the pastry is crispy.
The story
Originating in the 17th century, Zwiebelkuchen gained particular popularity in Frankfurt in the 1950s, when bar owners began preparing it as a dessert.
