A traditional German dish, Eintopf is a unifying stew that combines various ingredients in one pot.

Ingredients

  • 2 kg of beef, cut into pieces
  • 1 kg of mixed vegetables (carrots, potatoes, cabbage, onions)
  • 1 liter of beef broth
  • 200 g of lentils
  • 200 g of beans
  • 100 g of lard
  • 100 g of butter
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 2 garlic cloves, chopped
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Chopped parsley for garnish

Method

  1. In a large pot, sauté the lard and garlic in a bit of butter.
  2. Add the onion and sauté for a few minutes.
  3. Add the meat and vegetables, stirring well.
  4. Cover with beef broth and bring to a boil.
  5. Reduce heat and let simmer for 2-3 hours, adding water if necessary.
  6. Add the lentils and beans, continue to cook for another 30 minutes.
  7. Turn off the heat, add salt and pepper to taste, and garnish with chopped parsley.
  8. Serving suggestion: serve hot in a bowl with a damp napkin to soak up the broth.

The story

Eintopf is a tradition dating back to the Middle Ages, when farmers would combine leftover foods in one pot to create a warm and nourishing meal.
