Ingredients

  • 500 g of soft wheat flour
  • 200 g of sugar
  • 100 g of butter
  • 4 eggs
  • 1 packet of baking powder
  • 1 tablespoon of warm water
  • 1/2 teaspoon of salt
  • Oil for frying

Method

  1. In a large bowl, mix the soft wheat flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt.
  2. In another bowl, beat the eggs and butter until you get a smooth mixture.
  3. Add the egg and butter mixture to the flour, gently incorporating until you get a homogeneous dough.
  4. Add the warm water and mix until you get a smooth consistency.
  5. Let the dough rise in a warm place for about 30 minutes.
  6. Form the bread balls and fry them in hot oil until golden brown.
  7. Drain the bærnebrød on a paper towel to absorb the oil and serve it warm.

Bærnebrød, or children's bread, is a Norwegian tradition dating back to the 19th century, often prepared for children's meals due to its rich recipe of sugar and soft wheat flour.
