Ingredients

  • 4 apples
  • 250 g flour
  • 150 g sugar
  • 100 g butter
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon powder
  • 1/4 cup cold water
  • 1 tablespoon icing sugar

Method

  1. Prepare the apples by slicing them thinly and dusting them with a bit of sugar.
  2. Mix the flour, butter, sugar, eggs, vanilla, cinnamon, and cold water to form a dough.
  3. Take a pan and line the bottom with the dough, then add the apple slices.
  4. Make a second crust with the remaining dough and cover the apples.
  5. Bake the pastel in the oven at 356°F (180°C) for 30-35 minutes, until the crust is golden and the apples are cooked.
  6. Remove from the oven, let it cool, and decorate with icing sugar.

The story

The pastel de manzana originates from Santiago, where it has been a popular Christmas and New Year's Eve dessert for years.
