Poppy Seed Cake
Makowiec is a traditional Polish cake, rich in poppy seeds and crunchy with sugar.

Ingredients
- 250 g of flour
- 200 g of sugar
- 3 eggs
- 100 g of butter
- 50 g of almonds
- 100 g of poppy seeds
- 1 packet of baking powder
- 1 tablespoon of warm water
- 1 tablespoon of lemon juice
- 100 g of pulled sugar
- 100 g of icing sugar
- 100 g of chopped nuts
Method
- Prepare the dough: mix the flour, butter, baking powder, warm water, and lemon juice.
- Add the eggs and sugar, mix well until you get a homogeneous cream.
- Add the chopped almonds and poppy seeds, gently mix.
- Form a thin cake on a baking tray and bake at 180°C for 20-25 minutes.
- Make the glaze: melt the icing sugar with a little water and add the pulled sugar.
- Whip the glaze and decorate the cake with the glaze and chopped nuts.
- Let it cool and serve.
The story
Makowiec was known in the 16th century, but became a popular sweet treat in the 19th century when poppy seeds became more accessible.
