Ingredients

  • 250 g of flour
  • 200 g of sugar
  • 3 eggs
  • 100 g of butter
  • 50 g of almonds
  • 100 g of poppy seeds
  • 1 packet of baking powder
  • 1 tablespoon of warm water
  • 1 tablespoon of lemon juice
  • 100 g of pulled sugar
  • 100 g of icing sugar
  • 100 g of chopped nuts

Method

  1. Prepare the dough: mix the flour, butter, baking powder, warm water, and lemon juice.
  2. Add the eggs and sugar, mix well until you get a homogeneous cream.
  3. Add the chopped almonds and poppy seeds, gently mix.
  4. Form a thin cake on a baking tray and bake at 180°C for 20-25 minutes.
  5. Make the glaze: melt the icing sugar with a little water and add the pulled sugar.
  6. Whip the glaze and decorate the cake with the glaze and chopped nuts.
  7. Let it cool and serve.

The story

Makowiec was known in the 16th century, but became a popular sweet treat in the 19th century when poppy seeds became more accessible.
