Ingredients

  • 4 slices of toasted bread
  • 5 oz smoked ham
  • 5 oz cheddar cheese
  • 3 tbsp ketchup
  • 1 tbsp soy sauce
  • 6 basil leaves
  • oil for frying
  • salt and pepper to taste

Method

  1. Fry the slices of toasted bread in a little oil, adding salt and pepper to taste.
  2. Place a generous amount of smoked ham on the first slice of bread.
  3. Add the cheddar cheese on top of the ham and cover with the second slice of bread.
  4. Fry the sandwich until the cheese melts and the bread is golden brown.
  5. Place the fried sandwich on a plate and top with a ketchup and soy sauce mixture.
  6. Add the basil leaves on top and serve hot.

The story

The Hot Brown Sandwich originated in the 1920s at the Brown Hotel in Louisville, when a customer asked the bartender to make him a sandwich with smoked ham and cheese.
