Ingredients
- 4 slices of toasted bread
- 5 oz smoked ham
- 5 oz cheddar cheese
- 3 tbsp ketchup
- 1 tbsp soy sauce
- 6 basil leaves
- oil for frying
- salt and pepper to taste
Method
- Fry the slices of toasted bread in a little oil, adding salt and pepper to taste.
- Place a generous amount of smoked ham on the first slice of bread.
- Add the cheddar cheese on top of the ham and cover with the second slice of bread.
- Fry the sandwich until the cheese melts and the bread is golden brown.
- Place the fried sandwich on a plate and top with a ketchup and soy sauce mixture.
- Add the basil leaves on top and serve hot.
The story
The Hot Brown Sandwich originated in the 1920s at the Brown Hotel in Louisville, when a customer asked the bartender to make him a sandwich with smoked ham and cheese.
